What is Botox?

Botox® is a brand of botulinum toxin type A, a prescription-only medicine that relaxes the muscles it is injected into.

Botox® temporarily reduces the strength of nerve signals reaching targeted muscles. This muscle relaxation reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and the aim is to keep facial movement and expression natural. Botox® is most suited to dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement.

Botox® works by temporarily blocking the release of acetylcholine, the chemical messenger nerves use to tell muscles to contract. With less of that signal getting through, the treated muscles contract less, which reduces the repeated movement that contributes to dynamic lines.

Although Botox® is typically used to address signs of ageing in the face, it is not the same as dermal fillers.

Dermal Fillers vs Botox

Many of our clients choose to have both dermal fillers and Botox anti-wrinkle injections, but how are they different?

Dermal fillers, as the name suggests, add volume and help to smooth lines and wrinkles. They are usually used for lines that are visible at rest, whereas Botox® is used for those created dynamically (by muscle contractions), for instance frown lines.

During your consultation, one of our doctors or nurse prescribers will work with you to assess the best treatment, with tailored advice every step of the way.

Our Botox Treatments in Surrey

Botox® is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment that may suit people looking to soften lines caused by muscle movement. Our Surrey clinic offers Botox® led by our doctors and nurse prescribers.

Uses for Botox® include:

  • Forehead lines – softens the horizontal lines on your forehead.
  • Crow’s Feet – Softens lines at the corners of the eyes caused by smiling or squinting.
  • Frown Lines – softens lines caused by frowning, including the vertical “11” lines between the eyebrows.
  • Bunny Lines – Reduces lines across the bridge of the nose.
  • Brow Lift – can subtly raise the brows for a more refreshed look.
  • Gummy Smile – can reduce how much of the upper gum shows when you smile.
  • Platysma Bands – Softens ageing lines and bands in the neck.
  • Marionette Lines – Softens lines from the mouth to the chin.

We also treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). If that’s your concern, book a consultation and one of our prescribers will talk you through the options.

If Botox® is not suitable for you, we may be able to suggest other non-surgical options, such as dermal fillers.

The Botox Treatment Process

Consultation

As with all our treatments, your first interaction with Light Touch Clinic for Botox® treatment will be a detailed consultation at our clinic in Surrey.

Your consultation lets us check whether Botox® is suitable for you and plan the treatment around your goals. It is also your chance to ask questions before deciding whether to go ahead.

If Botox® is suitable for you, the treatment itself is quick, and most people describe it as a slight pinch.

Treatment

The treatment involves administering Botox® through a series of tiny injections. Prior to treatment, numbing cream can be administered to minimise any pain.

Botox® gradually softens the muscle movements that cause lines, so the lines look less pronounced. The aim is to keep your ability to make natural facial expressions.

The injections themselves usually take 10 to 15 minutes, and most appointments take around 30 minutes in total.

Results

Botox® is designed to create a subtle change, softening the look of lines so you look refreshed and like yourself.

The results often take around two weeks to be fully visible.

Botox – Frequently Asked Questions

Botox® is a brand name for botulinum toxin, which is used cosmetically to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily relaxing facial muscles. It blocks nerve signals to the muscles, preventing them from contracting, which smooths out the skin.

Anti-wrinkle injections is the general term for treatments that relax the muscles behind expression lines, and Botox® is one brand name used for them. You can read more about the treatment on our anti-wrinkle injections page.

Botox® is a licensed prescription-only medicine in the UK. At Light Touch Clinic, it is prescribed and administered by trained medical professionals following a consultation and suitability assessment. As with any medical treatment, it carries some risk of side effects, such as temporary bruising, swelling or headache, which your prescriber will discuss with you beforehand.

The effects of Botox® typically last between 3 to 4 months. Over time, the treated muscles gradually regain activity, and wrinkles may reappear, requiring repeat treatments to maintain results.
Botox® is generally well tolerated. Some people feel mild, temporary discomfort during treatment (numbing cream can be used), and small red marks or bruising may appear at the injection sites, usually clearing within a few hours to a couple of days. Less commonly, people notice a headache, a temporary heavy or drooping eyelid or brow, or slight unevenness between the two sides. These effects are temporary and fade as the treatment wears off. Your prescriber will go through the possible side effects with you at your consultation, and you can contact the clinic at any point after treatment if something does not feel right.
The best time to get Botox® depends on your skin goals, lifestyle, and skin type. Many begin treatment in their late 20s or early 30s to soften early lines, while others start later to soften lines that have already formed.

Factors like sun exposure, genetics, and skincare routines also play a role in determining when Botox® may be beneficial. Overall, if you’re noticing the early signs of ageing or want to maintain a youthful appearance, book a consultation with us and we can help you decide when to start treatment.

While the Botox® procedure for men follows the same basic principles as it does for women, the approach and dosage can differ due to anatomical differences. Men tend to have thicker skin and larger facial muscles, so we may adjust the amount and placement of the injections to achieve natural-looking results.

Every treatment is tailored. This gives you the choice of a more subtle treatment that softens but doesn’t completely erase lines, maintaining a masculine appearance, or a stronger softening of lines and wrinkles.

Baby Botox® refers to using smaller, more precise doses of Botox® to create a more natural, subtle effect. The goal is to soften fine lines and wrinkles without completely freezing facial expressions.

This technique is often used by individuals seeking a more refreshed appearance rather than dramatic change, preserving natural facial movement while improving the skin’s smoothness.

Botox® is also used for some medical conditions. At Light Touch Clinic we offer treatment for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and your prescriber can talk you through whether it is suitable for you.

A frozen look usually comes from too much product or placement that doesn’t suit your face. We plan your dose around how your muscles move and what you want to keep, such as the ability to raise your brows. If you’d like a lighter result, ask us about Baby Botox®, which uses smaller doses.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during Botox® injections, often describing it as a slight pinch. The procedure is quick, and any pain is usually brief. We offer topical anaesthetics to minimise discomfort.

After Botox® treatment, you might have some redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, but these side effects typically resolve quickly. Most people can return to their normal activities immediately. It’s generally advised to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for a few hours, and your practitioner will explain the aftercare.

While many adults are eligible for Botox®, it’s not suitable for everyone. You should avoid Botox® if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neurological diseases. During the initial consultation, our experts will assess whether Botox® is suitable for you.

There is generally little to no downtime after Botox® treatment. Most people resume normal activities immediately, although you should avoid rubbing the treated areas and extreme heat (like saunas) for 24 hours. Mild redness or swelling may occur but typically resolves within hours.

It’s typically recommended to wait at least 24 hours after a Botox® procedure before drinking alcohol. Alcohol can increase the chances of bruising and swelling, as it may thin the blood and interfere with the healing process. For the best results, you may even want to avoid alcohol for up to 48 hours, allowing the Botox® to settle properly.

The Botox® procedure is relatively quick, usually lasting 10 to 15 minutes. Including the consultation, preparation, and aftercare discussion, the appointment may take around 30 minutes.

It requires minimal downtime, so many people schedule it during a lunch break. After the injection, you can return to regular activities with minor restrictions.

If you stop receiving Botox®, your wrinkles will not become worse, but they will gradually return to how they were before treatment. Botox® works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for creating wrinkles.

Once the effects wear off, these muscles will resume their normal activity, and the lines will slowly reappear. However, your skin won’t worsen beyond where it started, although the natural ageing process will continue. If Botox® was helping prevent further wrinkle development, you may notice new wrinkles over time.

Botox® can often be combined with other treatments. Many patients choose Botox® alongside dermal fillers, which can address different types of lines and volume loss.

Speak to us at Light Touch Clinic, and we can help you create a tailored treatment plan based on your skin’s needs.

The aim is that people notice you look rested rather than that you’ve had something done, because we soften lines rather than remove all movement. Some bruising at the injection points is possible in the first few days, so allow time before any big occasion.

Book at least two weeks before, so any bruising has settled and the result has fully developed. For a first treatment, allow three to four weeks so you know how your face responds before the day.
