Menopausal Weight Gain

Light Touch Clinic specialises in the effective treatment of weight gain caused by the menopause.

About Menopausal Weight Gain

Hormonal changes during menopause cause many women to gain weight around their stomach, thighs and hips. If you’ve tried to lose weight in these areas, you will know that they are notoriously hard to target without help.

Due to changing hormones, women are at more risk of depositing fat around their abdomen, hips, bottom and thighs during menopause. Despite their diet not changing and their level of exercise, staying the same, women become increasingly frustrated at their changing body shape.

At Light Touch Clinic we specialise in body contouring treatments to reduce the effects of weight gain caused by the menopause. We are the only clinic in Surrey to offer Emerald Laser treatment, a fantastic solution to stubborn fat loss. Book a consultation with one of our body contouring experts to find out more about our bespoke treatments for menopausal weight gain.

Menopausal Weight Gain – Frequently Asked Questions

During menopause, many women experience weight gain due to a combination of hormonal changes, ageing, and lifestyle factors. The drop in estrogen levels, which occurs during menopause, can lead to fat being stored more in the abdominal area, hips, bottom and thighs.

Ageing slows down metabolism, making it easier to gain weight even if eating and activity habits stay the same. During menopause, you may experience stress, poor sleep, and mood changes. This can lead to overeating or reduced physical activity during this time, which will also contribute to weight gain.

While it may be challenging to completely avoid weight gain during menopause, maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and good lifestyle habits can help minimise it.

Menopausal weight gain may last for several years, often overlapping with perimenopause and continuing into postmenopause. The duration and extent of weight gain vary from person to person, depending on genetics, lifestyle, and overall health.

Some people may find that their weight stabilises following the transition, but it does take constant work to maintain a healthy weight after menopause.

Menopause-related weight gain usually ranges from 5 to 10 pounds. Some women experience varying degrees of this, based on their lifestyle, body shape, and other variables. Women will gain around 5-8% of their baseline weight roughly 2 years into menopause.

To combat menopausal weight gain, focusing on a healthy lifestyle is essential.

Engage in regular physical activity, like aerobic exercises (brisk walking, jogging) and strength training. Building muscle helps burn more calories. Aim for at least 150-200 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise weekly, plus strength training twice a week.

As you get into your 50s, you may need about 200 fewer calories per day in comparison to your 30s and 40s. Focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Swap butter for healthier oils like olive or vegetable oil.

Added sugars and alcohol contribute extra calories, leading to weight gain. Cut back on sugary drinks, desserts, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Despite these efforts, you may still find yourself gaining weight during menopause. At Light Touch Clinic, we offer specialised body contouring treatments that help you minimise the effects of weight gain from menopause.

Our bespoke body contouring treatments help improve the self-esteem you may have lost from menopausal weight gain. These treatments include:

  • Coolsculpting: This procedure targets stubborn fat by freezing fat cells, which are then naturally processed and eliminated by the body through the lymphatic system.
  • Emerald Laser Fat Removal: This treatment shrinks fat cells, with research indicating a potential loss of up to 6 inches of fat over six weeks.
  • EMS Suit: The suit uses electrical muscle stimulation to mimic the effects of a full-body workout, delivering weight loss results efficiently.
