Smoker’s Lines

At Light Touch Clinic in Surrey, we offer advanced non-surgical treatments to soften these lines and rejuvenate the mouth area with natural-looking results.

What Are Smoker’s Lines?

Smoker’s lines, also known as lip lines or perioral lines, are fine vertical wrinkles that appear around the mouth, particularly above the upper lip. While often associated with smoking due to repetitive lip movements and the impact of toxins on collagen, these lines can also develop naturally through ageing, sun exposure, and lip movement.

As collagen and elastin levels decline over time, the skin around the lips becomes thinner and less elastic, making it more prone to creasing. Even individuals who have never smoked can develop these lines, which may cause lipstick to bleed and give the mouth a more aged or tired appearance. These lines can be effectively treated using fillers to restore lost volume.

Why Smoker’s Lines Form

Smoker’s lines may be small, but they can be one of the most frustrating signs of ageing. These vertical wrinkles around the lips are often caused by repeated movements, like sipping from a straw, pouting, or, as the name suggests, smoking. Over time, these motions begin to create lines in the delicate skin around the mouth.

As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen and elastin, two essential proteins that keep skin firm, plump, and elastic. Without this structural support, the skin around the mouth becomes thinner and less able to bounce back from movement, making fine lines more likely to form and deepen.

Smoker’s Lines – Frequently Asked Questions

Smoker’s lines are fine vertical wrinkles that appear around the lips, most commonly above the upper lip. You’ll typically notice them when your lips are at rest, but potentially when wearing lipstick, as it can bleed into the lines. They can give the mouth a puckered or aged appearance, even in otherwise youthful skin.
No, despite the name, smoker’s lines can affect anyone. They form as a result of repetitive lip movement and a gradual loss of skin elasticity. Ageing, sun exposure, and genetics all play a role, which is why non-smokers often notice these lines developing too.
We often recommend precise dermal filler injections to treat smoker’s lines. These fillers restore lost volume and smooth the skin around the mouth, softening the appearance of vertical lip lines without compromising natural facial movement.
Treatment is generally well-tolerated. We use ultra-fine needles and may apply a numbing cream beforehand to ensure your comfort. Most clients describe the sensation as a mild pinch or pressure that passes quickly.
Results can last between 9 and 12 months, depending on your skin, lifestyle, and the type of filler used. Regular maintenance appointments can help to ensure results are long-lasting.
While we can’t promise complete removal, we can significantly reduce their appearance. Our goal is to create smoother, firmer skin around the lips while preserving a natural expression. With regular treatment, the area can appear noticeably rejuvenated.
There’s little to no downtime required. You may experience slight redness, swelling, or bruising around the treated area, but this usually subsides within a day or two. Most clients return to their normal routine immediately.
Absolutely. We take a conservative approach to filler application to ensure your facial expressions remain natural while the lines around your mouth are visibly softened.
Many clients see visible improvement after a single session, but deeper lines may benefit from multiple treatments. We’ll assess your skin during consultation and recommend a treatment plan tailored to your goals.
We’re a trusted aesthetic clinic based in Weybridge, Surrey, with years of experience in non-surgical facial rejuvenation. Our skilled injectable doctors take the time to understand your needs and deliver safe, expertly placed treatments designed to enhance, not freeze, your natural beauty.
