What is Botox?

Botox® is a trademarked, shortened version of botulinum toxin, a toxin that works as a muscle suppressant.

The toxin works by stopping nerve signals from reaching targetted muscles, or by reducing the strength of these signals. This addresses lines and wrinkles that are caused by muscle contraction. This makes Botox® effective for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement.

Although Botox® is typically used to address signs of ageing in the face, it is not the same as dermal fillers.

Dermal Fillers vs Botox

Many patients choose to have both dermal fillers and botulinum toxin, but how are they different?

Fillers, as the name suggests, fill in lines, wrinkles & blemishes. Hyaluronic acid in the filler solution stimulates collagen creation and helps to smooth the skin. Dermal fillers will work on lines and wrinkles that are permanently visible, whereas Botox® is for those which are created dynamically, for instance, frown lines.

During your consultation, one of our expert aesthetic practitioners will work with you to assess the best form of treatment, providing tailored advice and guidance every step of the way.

Our Botox Treatments in Surrey

Botox® is the ideal choice for people looking to improve their appearance in a non-surgical, non-invasive manner. Our clinic in Surrey specialises in professional Botox® treatment.

Uses for Botox® include:

  • Forehead lines – Botox® smooths the horizontal lines on your forehead.
  • Crow’s Feet – Softens lines at the corners of the eyes caused by smiling or squinting.
  • Frown Lines – Minimises any lines caused by frowning, for a relaxed look.
  • Bunny Lines – Reduces lines across the bridge of the nose.
  • Brow Lift – Elevates the brows, creating a more refreshed look.
  • Gummy Smile – Reduces exposure of the upper gum.
  • Platysma Bands – Softens ageing lines and bands in the neck.
  • Glabellar lines – Smooths vertical “11” lines between the eyebrows.
  • Marionette Lines – Softens lines from mouth to chin.

Botox® can also help combat excessive sweating and is often used in the treatment of migraines.

In a broader sense, botulinum toxin can target numerous signs of ageing in the facial and neck region. If Botox® is not suitable, we have a range of other non-surgical treatments that will be.

The best way to find out is from a thorough consultation with Dr Geary, where she can assess whether Botox® treatment at our clinic in Surrey is the right solution for you.

The Botox Treatment Process

Consultation

As with all our treatments, your first interaction with Light Touch Clinic for Botox® treatment will be a detailed consultation at our clinic in Surrey.

It is important to include this stage to ensure the treatment can produce the results you desire. Consultations by medically trained professionals can help to put patients at ease, knowing they are in the best possible hands.

If we determine that Botox® is the correct procedure for you, the process itself is quick and virtually pain-free.

Treatment

The treatment involves administering Botox® through a series of tiny injections. Prior to treatment, numbing cream can be administered to minimise any pain.

The Botox® will begin to cause a softening of the muscle movements & with this, the lines and wrinkles will fade. Youthfulness is restored, but without losing the ability to make facial expressions, the skin appears firmer and more luminous.

Cosmetic treatments typically take between 30 and 60 minutes to administer – this is your total time at the clinic.

Results

Botox® creates subtle change, dissipating the signs of ageing so you can look the very best version of yourself.

However, the results can be far more than the aesthetic or skin-deep. We all want to look our best, and visible signs of ageing can be distressing. Our mental health can be affected, with aspects such as our confidence and self-esteem impinging on work, relationships and all areas of life. Addressing this is one of the huge benefits of cosmetic treatments.

The results often take around two weeks to be fully visible.

Botox – Frequently Asked Questions

Botox® is a brand name for botulinum toxin, which is used cosmetically to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by temporarily relaxing facial muscles. It blocks nerve signals to the muscles, preventing them from contracting, which smooths out the skin.
Yes, Botox® is very safe, our injectables experts follow strict procedures to ensure the success of every treatment. It is also FDA-approved for both cosmetic and medical uses. However, like all treatments, it carries some risk of side effects, such as slight bruising, swelling, or headache post-treatment.
The effects of Botox® typically last between 3 to 4 months. Over time, the treated muscles gradually regain activity, and wrinkles may reappear, requiring repeat treatments to maintain results.
Botox® is generally well tolerated, however, some may experience mild, temporary pain (though localised numbing cream can be used). Small red marks may temporarily appear on the skin’s surface along with bruising, however, this typically clears up within a few hours to a couple of days. The marks can also be easily covered by makeup.
The best time to get Botox® depends on your skin goals, lifestyle, and skin type. Many begin Botox® treatments in their late 20s or early 30s to prevent fine lines from deepening, while others may start later as a corrective treatment to smooth wrinkles that have already formed.

Factors like sun exposure, genetics, and skincare routines also play a role in determining when Botox® may be beneficial. Overall, if you’re noticing the early signs of ageing or want to maintain a youthful appearance, book a consultation with us and we can help you decide when to start treatment.

While the Botox® procedure for men follows the same basic principles as it does for women, the approach and dosage can differ due to anatomical differences. Men tend to have thicker skin and larger facial muscles, so we may adjust the amount and placement of the injections to achieve natural-looking results.

We are able to create entirely bespoke treatments. This gives you the choice of a more subtle treatment that softens but doesn’t completely erase lines, maintaining a masculine appearance, or a complete reduction in lines and wrinkles.

Baby Botox® refers to using smaller, more precise doses of Botox® to create a more natural, subtle effect. The goal is to soften fine lines and wrinkles without completely freezing facial expressions.

This technique is often used by individuals seeking a more refreshed appearance rather than dramatic change, preserving natural facial movement while improving the skin’s smoothness.

Yes, Botox® is commonly used to treat more than just wrinkles. It can also be effective for medical conditions such as excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), migraines, and muscle spasms. These treatments work by blocking nerve signals, reducing muscle activity and providing relief from these conditions.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during Botox® injections, often describing it as a slight pinch. The procedure is quick, and any pain is usually brief. We offer topical anaesthetics to minimise discomfort.
After Botox® treatment, you might have some redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, but these side effects typically resolve quickly. Most people can return to their normal activities immediately. It’s generally advised to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for a few hours to prevent the spreading of the toxin.
While many adults are eligible for Botox®, it’s not suitable for everyone. You should avoid Botox® if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neurological diseases. During the initial consultation, our experts will assess whether Botox® is suitable for you.
There is generally no downtime required after Botox® treatment. Most people resume normal activities immediately, although you should avoid rubbing the treated areas and extreme heat (like saunas) for 24 hours. Mild redness or swelling may occur but typically resolves within hours.
It’s typically recommended to wait at least 24 hours after a Botox® procedure before drinking alcohol. Alcohol can increase the chances of bruising and swelling, as it may thin the blood and interfere with the healing process. For the best results, you may even want to avoid alcohol for up to 48 hours, allowing the Botox® to settle properly.

The Botox® procedure is relatively quick, usually lasting 10 to 15 minutes. Including the consultation, preparation, and aftercare discussion, the appointment may take around 30 minutes.

It requires minimal downtime, so many people schedule it during a lunch break. After the injection, you can return to regular activities with minor restrictions.

If you stop receiving Botox®, your wrinkles will not become worse, but they will gradually return to how they were before treatment. Botox® works by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for creating wrinkles.

Once the effects wear off, these muscles will resume their normal activity, and the lines will slowly reappear. However, your skin won’t worsen beyond where it started, although the natural ageing process will continue. If Botox® was helping prevent further wrinkle development, you may notice new wrinkles over time.

Yes, Botox® can be safely combined with other treatments for even better results. Many patients opt for a combination of Botox® with dermal fillers, which can address different types of wrinkles and volume loss.

Consult with us at Light Touch Clinic, and we can help you create a tailored treatment plan based on your skin’s needs.
